The Ethereum Core team decided to postpone the integration of the Progpow algorithm that reduces the effectiveness of ASIC miners before the end of its verification by third-party auditors.
According to the developers, the aim of independent verification will be the study of the effectiveness of the new protocol for various types of hardware, including video cards and offs. Progpow must also fight the group extraction of ether, which in the future will ensure the increase in the total number of miners and increase the competitiveness of individual participants.
This decision was made due to the fact that some team members still doubt whether the new algorithm will be able to work successfully in practice and what impact it will have on the project. An audit data should help put a point in this matter. It is expected that the tests will be completed not earlier than March or early April of the current year.
Additionally, the team will collect and explore user reviews about Progpow, their opinions will be taken into account when integrating a new algorithm. Although Ethereum Core expects that miners will be divided into their views, so the results will be contradictory.
Developers are engaged not only by improving the current network, but also started forming Ethereum 2.0, which confirms recently published on GitHub
